The Koshi-Balancing System
The Koshi-Balancing system has evolved as a style of treatment that honors the key role of “root treatment” as described in Chapter 69 of the Nan Jing. The system expands upon these concepts to use the patient’s body as the key source of information about how treatment should proceed. At the heart of this style is astute palpation to discover a patient’s ‘pattern of distortion’. Much of this pattern lies in the shaoyang zone, which, interestingly, is also known as a “pivot” (of a different sort). Combining gentle needling with gentle manual therapies, treatment aims to unwind this ‘pattern’ and reestablish balance to the mind-body system, whether his/her complaint is body-centered or mental-emotional.

Koshi-Balancing includes elements of Japanese Meridian Therapy, Seitai Shinpo stretches, Sotai Ho movements, direct moxibustion, and osteopathic ‘listening’ techniques (with needle and hand). It is a brilliant synthesis of styles. This style honors modern research that has demonstrated the importance of the superficial and deep fascial layers, but grounds it in a thoroughly classical framework.

Koshi-Balancing, Further insights
At the core of Koshi-Balancing is the skill of ‘Listening’ - with the hands, and with the needle - to find resonance in the healing energetic. This skill will be practiced throughout the training. To facilitate this cultivation, Jeffrey threads dynamic question & discussion opportunities into the workshop, infusing his insight and inquisitiveness. Of primary focus are the following themes:

      • How to integrate new scientific understandings of the body - such as the new findings about the role of the fascia - with ancient knowledge
      • How much treatment is necessary to get a significant clinical shift in symptoms
      • How do we advance beyond the level of mere skilled technicians to become “superior physicians”
      • How do we awaken the ancient ‘knowing’ and better understand the modern-science of the Body-Mind in our hands (and hearts)

Seminar Structure
The certificate program is offered as four modules begining in November 2012 (see dates below). This is not simply a CEU program to fulfill requirements for recertification; it is a chance to transform how you practice.

Jeffrey Dann, PhD, LAc is one of those in the forefront of evolving a uniquely North American way of practicing AOM. His doctoral work was in anthropology, so it is no surprise that he is engaged in this work of forging a new style of AOM. He is also a martial artist trained in Japan. From this training and exposure to Japanese thinking and acupuncture styles, his body-centered approach to practice, which he calls Koshi-Balancing, started to take shape. Koshi literally means “hip” but represents the concept of the lumbo-sacral center - the core ‘pivot’ of the body.
